In Memoriam: Sergey Kalashnikov
Sergey Kalashnikov headed the HSE Office for Secondary Education and was responsible for cooperation with secondary schools of the HSE university educational network. He also conducted research and taught at HSE’s Institute of Education.
Sergey Pavlovich Kalashnikov was an engineer by training, however his career development took him into the education system. He worked as a teacher, a deputy principal and the principal of a school, he graduated with a Master’s degree from Manchester University and taught at the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences.
Once having moved to HSE, he became co-academic supervisor of the Master's programme ‘Educational Administration’, which trains school principals. In 2015 and 2016, he was the recipient of the HSE Best Teacher Award. His former students now head schools across Russia.
One year ago, Sergey Kalashnikov was appointed Director for Secondary Education at HSE. He subsequently began to develop a network of HSE partner schools. He travelled widely in the Russian regions, organized summer and winter schools for gifted children in HSE Training Centre Voronovo near Moscow, and facilitated cooperation between HSE faculties and Moscow public schools. His intention was to create an open platform for discussing pedagogical and management best practices in general education.
Sergey Kalashnikov will be remembered by his colleagues as someone who sincerely believed in the value of education and who was devoted to his work. With excellent decision-making skills and a strong sense of responsibility, he was a born teacher, an innovative researcher and a talented manager.
