For the second time, the HSE School of Foreign Languages has held a defence of specialised projects developed by fourth-year students of the Bachelor’s Programme in Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication. Representatives of major companies and organisations that support the school’s project activities gathered to evaluate the projects during a poster session.

From September 16 to December 15, 2024, students from several HSE programmes—'Translation and Translation Studies,’ ’Theory and Methodology of Teaching Foreign Languages,’ and ‘Intercultural Corporate Communication’—worked on projects in collaboration with employees from large organisations and firms. Representatives from the My Job Moscow employment centre, the Prosveshcheniye publishing house, the Russian Academy of Education, the Marilink company, as well as HSE divisions such as the International Cooperation Centre of the International Partnerships Office and the International Admissions Office, shared their experience and skills with the students. An expert jury evaluated the students' presentations as the result of this collaborative work.

‘This is a very important event for the School of Foreign Languages. For the second year in a row, we gather to listen to presentations of projects completed in collaboration with employers on real-world tasks. This time, 38 projects were implemented,’ said Ekaterina Kolesnikova, Head of the HSE School of Foreign Languages.

She also noted that the jury members included professionals engaged in research and international activities, working in industry and possessing high-level expertise in business and education. ‘We hope that highly challenging tasks were successfully resolved during the project work,’ added Ekaterina Kolesnikova.

Vanessa Motseichuk’s team collaborated with Kaspersky Lab. ‘The project’s goal was to translate a set of internal documents from English into Russian,’ the student explained. ‘These documents were of two types: some were about working with various devices and intended for all employees, while others were for first-line support specialists who handle different requests.’ Over eight weeks, the team translated 42 pages. ‘There were challenges: we encountered words whose translation had to be clarified because we were working with technical documents and specialised terminology,’ she said.

One team worked on developing the HSE English-language web portal. Under the guidance of chief editor Maria Nikitina, students translated texts from Russian to English and vice versa, transcribed audio interviews, performed routine checks of links and pages, and wrote materials for the Life in Moscow website.

Students interact directly with companies and tackle real tasks, which they clearly enjoy. ‘This is a great opportunity because business representatives and professionals from other fields get to see us. We present ourselves, showcase our strengths, and spark interest in our work. There are additional benefits too: the projects go into our portfolio, which we can show to potential employers at any time,’ said Gyulhar Tagieva, whose team developed a roadmap for the Kept company.

Other student projects included:

Developing materials for a digital interactive trainer for the Linguatest certified testing system in collaboration with the Prosveshchenie publishing house

Applied research on ‘Generation Z Candidate Expectations from Employers’ with the Get Experts company

Conducting a competitive analysis for Foxford

Proofreading the English version of the SmartLMS platform and the Syllabus Constructor 2.0

Developing e-courses for employees of the Manpower company, and many others

Ekaterina Belyatinskaya, General Director of Star Talk School of Foreign Languages

‘Our school has been collaborating with HSE for the second year on the development of professionally oriented projects. This year, we had two groups of three people who created two courses for us. The first was IT English, and the second was English for Business Communication. I want to highlight the high level of preparation of specialists capable of identifying a task and delivering a turnkey solution, from concept development to methodological materials and implementation as a finished product.’

Maria Andreeva, Marilink Company

‘We achieved great results. I am pleased with how the students worked on developing the company’s social media: they created visual content, helped with videos, and translated materials from Chinese into Russian. This is the second time our company has participated in such project work at HSE University. I like how the students work. They are all professionals in their field, competent in various areas.’
