HSE Faculty of Computer Science Opens Joint Department with RAS Steklov Mathematical Institute
A joint department with the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences has opened at the Faculty of Computer Science (FCS). Leading mathematicians from the Steklov Institute will be involved in the department’s operations. The partnership aims to leverage the educational and research potential of the two institutions to train highly qualified specialists.
Dr Maxim Korolev, Deputy Director for Research at the Steklov Institute, will be leading the new department at HSE University.
FCS students will be able to get credits for courses taken at the Steklov Institute Research and Education Centre.
According to Dr Korolev, learning from working mathematicians is incredibly valuable for students, as these experts bring their unique perspectives and insights to the subject matter. Additionally, this partnership will make original courses on modern mathematical problems more accessible to young people, potentially influencing their career choices.
Maxim Korolev, Deputy Director for Research at the Steklov Institute
‘Gaining mathematical knowledge directly from working mathematicians is incredibly valuable for students, even in basic disciplines such as linear algebra and mathematical analysis. These experts have dedicated decades of their lives to their beloved science, giving them a unique and special perspective on the subject that cannot be obtained solely from textbooks. Additionally, the collaboration will grant HSE students access to original courses on the most modern problems and sections of mathematics, which have been taught at the Steklov Institute. We hope that this exposure to advanced mathematics will influence students' career choices—the Steklov Institute is always open to cooperation with young talents’.
Alexey Mitsyuk, Deputy Dean for Research and International Relations at the Faculty of Computer Science
‘One of the main priorities of the faculty's work is to strengthen partnerships with leading scientific centres in Russia. The establishment of a joint department with the RAS Steklov Mathematical Institute is a significant step towards achieving this goal. Having this department at the faculty demonstrates the high level of mathematical training our students receive, and this collaboration opens up new opportunities for them. Students will have the chance to explore original, pressing mathematical problems, and we hope that they will contribute to finding solutions. For the faculty's academic teams, the opening of the department brings new opportunities for joint research projects. Additionally, there are plans to organise joint academic events involving staff from both the Faculty of Computer Science and the Steklov Institute.’
The Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a Russian research institute in the field of mathematics. One of the world’s leading scientific mathematical centres, the institute conducts research on problems of fundamental mathematics and a range of its applications, as well as on relevant problems of mechanics, mathematical physics and theoretical physics.
